Professor Hoffmann
No Date c1890s

This little book is part of Frederick Warne's "Bijou Books" series, published around the end of the 19th century.

The author of this volume, devoted to simple card tricks, was Professor Louis Hoffmann (1839-1919). Born Angelo John Lewis, he was a lawyer, professor and the leading writer on magic, games and  amusements of his time. He is probably best known as the author of  'Modern Magic'.

Published by Frederick Warne & Co., London. There is no stated date or edition, but the book appears to be from around the 1890s. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with black titling on the spine and black and gold titling and designs on the front board. It measures approx. 3 7/8" x 2 7/8 with 96 pages, 4 figures within the text, rear endpaper is missing.

The case of the book is only in good condition with shelf wear and soiling on the boards. The spine ends and corners are bumped with some loss of colour around the corner tips and bottom of the spine. The titling and the illustration on the front board are in good condition.

The contents are loose. The pages are mostly clean but have some minor small stains. There is no inscription. There is a WH Smith London embossed stamp on the front Free End Paper.
All in all a lovely, rare book to treasure for any collector of magic conjuring.
